Shattuck (Harvard, M.D. 1835) was professor of clinical medicine at Harvard Medical School from 1855 until 1874, served as dean of the Medical School, and succeeded Oliver Wendell Holmes as visiting physician to the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1849. After graduation from medical school, he went to Paris with his friends H. I. Bowditch, A. Stillé, and Metcalfe to study with Louis. Lincoln (Bowdoin, M.D. 1827) lectured on anatomy and surgery at the University of Vermont Medical School and at the University of Maryland Medical School in Baltimore. While a student he was demonstrator in anatomy to Nathan Smith and to John Doane Wells, and between courses at Bowdoin he studied in Boston with George Cheyne Shattuck.
